Our Kitchen Story
A Buellton apartment. A regular oven. Recipes that work on weeknights.
Why does another food site need to exist?
Because most of them were built to be photographed, not cooked. The recipe sounds plausible until you're standing in the kitchen at 6:30 on a Wednesday and realize step four assumes you have a stand mixer, a double boiler, and a free hour.
We started this site because we kept running into the same problem. Long ingredient lists. Timing that assumed prep was already done. Substitution advice that was just "use something similar." Photos that looked nothing like what came out of our oven.
So we decided to write the version we actually wanted. Every recipe is cooked in our apartment kitchen in Buellton, California. We use the same grocery stores you use. We time everything from the first knife stroke. And we write the substitutions before we post the recipe, not as an afterthought.
What we commit to on every recipe
Accurate timing
We time from cutting board to plate. The number you see is the number we recorded. Not the optimistic version, not the "if you're already good at this" version.
No hidden sponsored content
No brand has paid us to feature their olive oil, their pasta, or their hot sauce. We buy everything ourselves. If we mention a product it's because we used it, not because someone sent us a check.
Honest difficulty ratings
We rate by technique required, not by step count. A recipe that needs you to properly sear meat is harder than one that needs more steps but no special skills. We explain what makes something difficult and why.
Tested substitutions
Every main ingredient has a tested substitute. We cooked the recipe with the swap before we wrote about it. "Use something similar" is not a substitution note.
Real kitchen photos
Our photos are taken during actual cooks. No food stylist, no professional lighting equipment, no tricks. The dish in the photo is the dish that came out of our oven that day.
No meal kits, no upsells
We do not sell you anything except information. No kits, no subscriptions to ingredient boxes, no affiliate links to specialty stores. The recipe is free and complete as written.
What this site is not
In Home Recipes is a food blog. We write about cooking. We do not provide nutritional counseling, medical dietary advice, or therapeutic guidance of any kind. Nothing on this site should be interpreted as a recommendation for managing a specific health condition through diet.
If you have dietary restrictions related to a medical condition, please consult a licensed healthcare provider or registered dietitian. Our recipes describe what we cooked and how we cooked it. That is the full extent of what we offer.
